Bard on the Beach

June to September
Vancouver, British Columbia

Established in 1990, Bard on the Beach is one of Canada's largest not-for-profit, professional Shakespeare Festivals. Presented in a magnificent setting on the waterfront in Vancouver's Vanier Park, the Festival offers Shakespeare plays, related dramas, and several special events in two performance tents from June through September each year.

The tents are the BMO Mainstage Theatre and the Howard Family Stage.

The Mainstage tent seating 720 is open-ended so that the actors perform against a spectacular backdrop of mountains, sea and sky - a highlight of the Bard experience.

The Howard Family stage seats 240. This intimate performance space features Shakespeare's lesser-known plays or some of his great classics presented with less traditional stagings.

As part of the experience, a concession, bar (offering red and white wine plus draft beer. hot and cold drinks, light snacks, popcorn, candy, and cookies) and Bard Boutique (with a wide selection of Shakespearean books, scripts, mementos, and clothing) are located on site in what is called the Bard Village. The Bard Village and concession is open one hour before the performance.

Located southwest of the Vancouver city centre over Burrard Bridge, the Bard on the Beach Venue is easily accessible from all points of the city.

Dress casually and warmly (bring a sweater or jacket) as the temperature drops after sunset.

Locals and tourists alike take the chance to create a picnic to enjoy on the lawns of the park before the shows.
