Folklorama Festival

early August
Winnipeg, Manitoba (MB)

The largest and longest-running multi-cultural festival in the world, Folklorama presents over 44 cultural pavilions where guests can sample ethnic food, meet traditionally costumed volunteers, enjoy lively cultural entertainment, interactive fun and learn about cultures and countries from around the world.

Named the 2009 Event of the Year by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, Folklorama has been a Winnipeg “must see” attraction more than four decades attracting close to half a million visitors each year.

The Folklorama Festival has also been acknowledged by the International Council of Organizations for Folklore Festivals and Folk Art (CIOFF) and was named the Top-Voted Event in Canada by readers and editors of WestJet magazine in their 2010 poll.

Each of the two weeks of the Folklorama Festival features over 20 different pavilions from destinations all over the world, including parts of Africa, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, the Caribbean, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Ethiopia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Paraguay, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Scotland and Scandinavia.

Some of the pavilions offer late night parties at the end of each week, offering a real chance to dance and join in on the celebrations.

In addition, Folklorama Culture at the CUBE, from Monday to Friday, presents a free, cultural entertainment lunchtime concert series featuring international and local performing groups.

Also free is the Kick-Off event at The Forks' outdoor theatre, an evening of entertainment that is, in effect, a sampler of the shows at the pavilions.

Developing out of the success of the festival, the organization also offers year-round programs: Talent, Teachings and Travel. All of the programs bring to life the organization's mission of celebrating diversity and promoting cultural understanding.

EVENT / FESTIVAL TIPS:
Tickets prices are $6 per pavilion, available at the entrance to each pavilion. The family pack at $54 for 12 tickets is available at the Folklorama office, 2nd Floor - 183 Kennedy Street or at all pavilions throughout the festival. Children 12 and under enjoy free admission when accompanied by an adult but be aware that there is a limit of five children per adult. Prices for dinner are about $10 each and drinks $5.

Be advised, however, that some of the pavilions are sold out fairly quickly, and that there are line-ups for admission, food and drinks. Also many of the pavilions accept cash only.

The Kick-Off event is very popular, attracting over 13,000, so it is advisable to arrive early for choice parking and a good place to set up to watch the fun.
