Winnipeg Folk Festival

early July
Winnipeg, Manitoba (MB)

With a reputation across the country for being one of the best festivals of its kind, and for showcasing some of the hottest acts, both established and up-and-coming, the outdoor Winnipeg Folk Fest takes place in July and attracts tens of thousands of festival-goers to Birds Hill Provincial Park in Winnipeg.

For over 41 years, the Winnipeg Folk Fest has welcomed more than 250 talented musicians in all genres including blues, Celtic, world and bluegrass music and was recently called “One of the Top Ten music festivals in the world” by Delta Sky Magazine.

During the day the artists perform and jam with each other on seven stages around the festival site, exchanging personal anecdotes and unique talent.

In the evening, the Main Stage becomes the focal point with an eclectic assortment of folk music from around the world set against the backdrop of the prairies.

Artists who have performed at the Winnipeg Folk Festival include Peter Seeger in the early days in 1980, and since then, Randy Newman, Elvis Costello, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Indigo Girls, City & Colour, Avett Brothers, Joan Baez, Bruce Cockburn, Billy Bragg, Feist, Blue Rodeo and many more.

As well as different stages of great folk music, the Winnipeg Folk Fest also offers an innovative folk school, a craft market with over 100 artisans, a food village that encourages the use of local, organic and fair trade ingredients, and a family area with kids' activities and entertainment, and programs for young performers and young visual artists.

In 1997, the Winnipeg Folk Fest was the first event of its kind to be certified by Canada’s Environmental Choice Program with an EcoLogo as a “green event,” in recognition of efforts to be environmentally proactive and in 2013 they received the international Greener Festival Award.

On-site camping is available.
