World Pond Hockey Championships

Plaster Rock, New Brunswick (NB)

The first such event ever organized, the World Pond Hockey Championship began in 2002 with 40 competing teams most of which were local (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Maine).

In less than ten years, the World Pond Hockey Championships have grown to feature more than 120 teams from all over the world. Teams include those from Canadian provinces and territories, United States, and more than 14 international countries.

The event attracts more than 8,000 spectators over the 4 days of the Championships during which 40 teams play simultaneously on 20 rinks at Roulston Lake in Plaster Rock Tourist Park.

Past champions include the New York Boars in 2011, the 4 time winning Boston Danglers, a local Fredericton team who won in the 2nd year, and of course, appropriately, the champions in the first year - the local team, the Tobique Puckers.

The winners of the Ladies Division in 2011 were a local team from Fredericton called the Hilltop Bud Lights.

The World Pond Hockey Championship is a fundraising activity for a new arena facility for the people of the Tobique River Valley. With the aid of sponsors and volunteers, the World Pond Hockey event has contributed over a quarter of a million dollars towards the project and a brand new indoor arena is underway near Roulston Lake.
