Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival

late May to early June
Kentville, Fundy Shore & Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia (NS)

Saluting spring and the culture, the heritage, and the agricultural base of the Annapolis Valley, the Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival attracts more than 150,000 visitors each year to enjoy the wide range of family-fun events.

Originally set up to promote the region’s apple industry, and the scenic beauty of the valley, The Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival started in 1933, and is now the second longest consecutive running festival in Canada.

Attracting almost 100,000 people, the Apple Blossom Grand Street Parade is the highlight of the festival and is one of the largest parades in Canada celebrated and supported for more than 78 years. With well over 200 entries each year, the parade lasts for about two hours and features marching bands, floats, and the “royal” procession of Queen Annapolisa who is crowned at a gala event the night before the parade with her princesses representing the towns and villages of the area.

The princess floats are judged and awards given for the most outstanding, most artistic and most original. Awards are also offered to the floats in various categories, including historic, commercial. comic and community entries.

There is also a special children’s version of the parade, the largest children's parade in Canada, that takes place in the morning before the actual Grand Street Parade.
Other events rounding off the fun of the festival include the Apple Blossom Concert, dances, barbecues, and old-style social affairs in the towns and villages of Annapolis Valley.

One of the liveliest locations during the festival is downtown Kentville's where the local pubs offer a traditional welcome to visitors, old and new.

In both 1988 and 1991, the Apple Blossom Festival was selected by the American Bus Association as one of the "top 100" tourist events in North America. The festival continues to be a popular event, drawing most Annapolis Valley residents, and many tourists to events throughout the four days of operation.
