Shaw Festival

April to end October
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario (ON)

Renowned internationally for single-handedly revitalizing and re-energizing the works of Bernard Shaw, the Shaw Festival is the only theatre in the world that specializes exclusively in plays by George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries, and in plays about the period of Shaw’s lifetime.

Plays in the Shaw Festival lineup have included American classics, comedies as well as dramas, from “The Man Who Came to Dinner” to the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”; musicals by Brecht and Weill, Rodgers and Hart, and everything in between; early Victorian dramas from J.M. Barrie’s playlet “Half an Hour” and Oscar Wilde’s witty “An Ideal Husband”.

The Shaw Festival is also responsible for resurrecting plays which were considered major works when they were written but which have since been unjustly neglected. Remarkable playwrights such as St John Hankin and Harley Granville Barker have been rediscovered by the Shaw Festival.
The Shaw Festival presents plays in four distinctive theatres: the flagship Festival Theatre, the historic Court House Theatre where the Shaw Festival first began performing, the Royal George Theatre, modeled after an Edwardian opera house and the new 200-seat Studio Theatre. All theatres are within a short walking distance of each other.

Part of the Shaw Festival mandate is in education and so offers free enrichment programs, such as pre-show chats at the Festival Theatre, Tuesday Q&A, Saturday Conversations, and Sunday Coffee Concerts, seminars, behind-the-scenes tours and workshops.
