Magic of Lanterns

September, October
Montréal, Québec (QC)

The Lantern Festival is based on a centuries-old Chinese New Year tradition in which lanterns are carried through the streets as the day fades away and the night begins. It is a tradition that has been enjoyed for more than a thousand years

The Montreal, Canada version, the Magic of Lanterns, takes place in the Chinese Garden of the Montréal Botanical Garden in Fall each year.

With a fresh new design and theme each year, more than 700 lanterns in the Magic of Lanterns festival are designed in Montréal, crafted by hand in Shanghai and shipped to Canada where a special team of electricians, carpenters, painters, and welders create the final effect at the Montréal Botanical Gardens where the display is open to the public until 9pm each night from mid September to the end of October.

In the early days in China, the lanterns were made of silk and paper. Today, while the designs and motifs of plants, animals and mythical scenes are still traditional in scope, the actual lanterns these days often use more modern materials like nylon.

With concern for energy conservation, the lighting for The Magic of Lanterns was modernized in 2008, with the new TFT LED Contactless System which means that almost 10 times less energy is used.

Ranked as one of the largest of its kind in the world, the Montréal Botanical Garden is a living museum of plants from all parts of the world and is the perfect setting for the Magic of Lanterns festival - voted as one of the American Bus Association top events for 2011.

The Magic of Lanterns is not just about the parade of colourful lanterns. It is also about promoting the culture of China and to this end, also at the Montréal Botanical Garden, Chinese green tea and Chinese pastries are served, and small paper Chinese lanterns can be bought at the Chinese Garden gift shop.
