Windscape Kite Festival

Swift Current, Saskatchewan (SK)

A popular event for over ten years, the world-class Windscape Kite Festival attracts kite flyers and kite enthusiasts from all over the world for a weekend of kites and family fun as original handmade art kites, giant creature kites, kites trains, fighter kites, stunt kites and kite buggies fill the air over the prairie field.

International celebrity kite performers and world renowned kite makers come from as far as Africa, Belgium, China, France, Germany, India, and Thailand to take part in the kite flying demonstrations. Celebrity kite flyers include the likes of the hugely popular RevRiders from the USA, Connor Doran of America's Got Talent 2010 fame, Bernhard Dingwerth from Germany, Canadians Rob Huntley, Ray Gowan, and award winning veterans Edith Lacombe and Stéphane Déry.

For those with a little less experience, there are many opportunities at the Windscape Kite Festival to get up to scratch.

Under the supervision of master kite builders, the Windscape Kite Festival kite workshops provide the opportunity for visitors to learn all about kites and to make one of their own. And for those who don’t want to experience the fun of making their own kites, the Windscape Kite Store has a wide selection of kites on sale, from cheap beginners models to more elaborate creations.

With kite in hand, members of the public can head off to the designated area of the prairie field to take a free lesson in kite flying, and then take part in all the fun of kite flying. There is even a free-of-charge kite hospital for all those broken and battered kites that have crashed a few times too many.

Rounding off the fun, daily activities and entertainment include twice-daily performances from the Flyin' Bob Festival show featuring everything from juggling, balloon art, yo-yos and diabolos to a 20-foot-high 60-foot-long skywriter, egg catapult, and the 20-foot-long high wire of death.

The food tent offers a selection of locally grown and produced foods and the Children’s Tent entertains the younger ones with a bubble station, balloon sculpting, a straw bale maze, and a treasure-filled sand pile, as well as face-painting and tattoos.

The Windscape Kite Festival is a free event and runs on both Saturday and Sunday in late June from 10am to 5pm. The free festival program, passport and autograph book (available at the site) gives a wealth of information about the international celebrity kite flyers displaying their talents. For those eager to collect autographs, there are prizes for the most signatures collected.
