The Calgary Stampede

Calgary, Alberta (AB)

Billed as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” the 10-day Calgary Stampede held every July attracts more than two million visitors to enjoy the Stampede party atmosphere.

The Calgary Stampede is also one of the richest rodeos in the world with more than $2 million in prizes attracting top competitors from across Canada, the USA and around the world.

Preserving and promoting western heritage and values, the Calgary Stampede is a volunteer-supported, not-for-profit community organization.

Events take place all around the city, but the main events happen at the Stampede Park open from 11 a.m. to midnight during the Calgary Stampede.

The official opening parade features marching bands and hundreds of floats and horses, First Nations dancers, members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, clowns and performers, and local dignitaries.

The Stampede Rodeo, the largest such event in the world offers prizes totaling more than $1,000,000 for the six main categories of bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, tie down roping, saddle bronco and bareback riding.

Also known as the “Half-Mile of Hell”, the ever popular Chuckwagon GMC Rangeland Derby event features 36 drivers, 288 horses, and their outriders competing for millions of dollars in prize money.

Another favorite at the Calgary Stampede is the Midway with more than 40 major rides and two concert venues, the Coco-Cola Stage, and Nashville North. The Kid’s Midway features 24 rides designed exclusively for families with younger children.

With more than 1,000 exhibitors, the agricultural exhibition is another huge part of the Calgary Stampede and showcases the rich agricultural heritage of Alberta through competitions, exhibits and livestock auctions.

Be prepared for a very crowded Calgary during the Calgary Stampede and book accommodation well in advance to avoid disappointment. Also book your park admission, rodeo and evening show tickets ahead of time. These tickets, including special deals and packages typically go on sale in October the year before the event.
