Edmonton Folk Music Festival

Edmonton, Alberta

From its humble beginning in 1980, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival has grown to be one of the world's premier folk festivals.

It is held during the second week in August in Edmonton’s beautiful downtown Gallagher Park, and is one of the many events that has helped earn the city the title of "Festival City of Canada”!

Attracting folk musicians from around the world, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival features everything from traditional and contemporary folk music to Celtic, country, blues, gospel, world music, soul and more besides, with musicians taking part in workshops, jam sessions and fully fledged concerts too.

There are six stages but the Main Stage is the most popular attraction showcasing such stars as KD Lang, Joni Mitchell, Stan Rogers, Great Big Sea, Oysterband, Loreena McKennitt, Norah Jones, Steve Earle, The Blind Boys Of Alabama, David Gray, David Byrne and Michael Franti.

Other features of the festival include a stage for children’s entertainment, food vendors, crafts stands, a CD tent, and a beer garden, information tent, lost & found, first aid, non-smoking area, telephone, washrooms, water & wash stands, recycling stations and insta-bank.

Gallagher Park is just across the river from downtown (next to 97 Ave and 94 St.

There is no onsite parking for the event, so most locals are used to biking (and using the bike lock up service) or walking to the venue, or using public transit which goes right to the park from all directions.

Be prepared for changes in weather - hot days can rapidly turn into chilly evenings, sunny skies to rain. Bug repellent is also highly recommended as is something to sit on such as a tarp or a blanket. Regular chairs are not permitted.
