Edmonton International Fringe Festival

mid August
Edmonton, Alberta

Established by director Brian Paisley in 1982, the annual Edmonton International Fringe Festival was the first fringe festival in North America, and was based on the model of the world famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Today the Edmonton International Fringe Festival is North America's oldest and largest fringe theatre festival, attracting performers from Canada and around the world.

Due to the huge interest in performing at the festival, admittance to the festival for performers is now awarded by a lottery system.

While the main theme of the festival is “theatre”, events showcase many different types of art and entertainment. The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival is eleven days of revealing theatre, food, arts and crafts on-site with upwards of 400,000 performers attracting more than 93,000 patrons to enjoy the Festival's indoor shows.

The festival takes place at several venues in Old Strathcona including the Walterdale Playhouse, the Transalta Arts Barns, the Varscona Theatre, and the Catalyst Theatre, and many other venues such as Acacia Hall and King Edward Academy.

The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival mission statement says that the festival is dedicated to the creation of theatre that challenges and celebrates the cultural fabric of our communities, and provides a home for developing new and emerging artists, audiences and forums.

Tickets for the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival are only available through the Festival Box Offices. The Central Box Office is located in the lobby of the TransAlta Arts Barns building at 10330 – 84 Ave, at site box offices located throughout the Fringe festival grounds, or by telephone at 780-409-1910

Site Box Offices are open ONE HOUR prior to the first scheduled performance of the day and close immediately after the last show at that particular venue.

Tickets are available up to the start of the performance for those last-minute decision makers, and there are dedicated “Pick-Up” windows at the Central Box Office for quick pick-up of previously purchased tickets.
