Edmonton International Street Performers Festival

mid July
Edmonton, Alberta

Each year in mid July, Edmonton’s downtown core is transformed into the ultimate play zone as street performers from around the globe gather for ten days of fun and laughter in the annual Edmonton International Street Performers Festival.

A main attraction for over 26 years, the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival was the first of its kind in North America when it began in 1985.

Since then it has attracted more than 4 million visitors and has become one of the the most emulated festival models around the world.

Featuring over 150 shows daily, the Festival entertains audiences of all ages and showcases amazing street performers, rovers, interactive comedy characters, musicians and more as they take to the streets with outrageous antics and general clowning around.

Artists have come from Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Macedonia, Russia, Thailand, England, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, USA and across Canada and artists include jugglers, magicians, musicians, stilt walkers, clowns, diabolo, rolla bolla, catapult, cabbage catchers, aerialists, comedians, dancers, balancers, tight rope, slack rope, comedy troupes, street theatre artists, mime, roving comedians, living statues, installations, characters, circus acts, fire eaters and more.

An integral part of the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival is Late Night Madness which was introduced to the program in 1989. The one-of-a-kind cabaret performances that have become a favorite of ‘mature’ StreetFest patrons bring the street to the stage with shows featuring a different cast of kooky characters pushing the envelope and the limits of laughter.

Another feature of the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival is Troupe du Jour. Shows offer audiences the best of the fest with nightly performances at 10pm near the west staircases of the Square. Showcasing a different cast of performers each night, the hour long variety shows are suitable for the whole family and honor the pass-the-hat tradition.

EVENT / FESTIVAL TIPS:
There is no general admission charged to the public to gain admittance onto the Square and all outdoor shows are performed in the “pass-the-hat” tradition, meaning that audiences choose to make a voluntary donation to the performer’s “hat” after each show.
