Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival

September,
Prince Edward Island, ( PEI )

The Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival began in 1996 to celebrate Prince Edward Island shellfish through a festive gathering of shellfish producers and those who love to eat shellfish.

Today, the event draws people from around the world to Prince Edward Island and has grown into one of the largest festivals on the island.

Hailed as the "Biggest Kitchen Party in Atlantic Canada", the Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival takes place each year on the third weekend in September on the Historic Charlottetown Waterfront and appeals to locals and visitors alike, with activities and entertainment to suit a wide range of ages.

Events of the Prince Edward Island International Shellfish Festival include interactive shellfish culinary demonstrations and liberal tastings of seafood chowder, freshly steamed PEI mussels, clams, and the renowned PEI Oysters.

Oyster fans come to take part in the Raspberry Point PEI Oyster Shucking Championship, The North American Oyster Shucking Showdown and the World Invitational Oyster Shucking Championship where competitors amaze the crowd with their skill and speed as they compete against some of the world’s best oyster shuckers.

Other festival weekend highlights include the Go Deep International Tie One On Mussel Competition, the International PEI Shellfish Chef Challenge, The World is Your Oyster free children’s program, the Atlantic Veterinary College Marine Touch Tank, and Peake’s Wharf Boat Cruises with guided tours and shellfish.

The appeal of the event is in the professional competitions, a combination of food and fun with an appeal to all the family, and the chance to sample some of Prince Edward Island's finest shellfish.
